Choose between TO or ING


TO AND FOR TO EXPRESS PURPOSE

1. To + infinitive

We use to + infinitive to talk about a clear goal or intention.

Example: Why do you work?

  • I work to pay my bills

2. For + gerund

We use for + gerund to describe the general function or use of something.

Example: what the tool is used for. 

  • This tool is for weeding the garden.
